One of the loveliest things about walking through woodland in early spring is the polyphony of birdsong. Listening to the different voices connects us to a three-dimensional soundscape: some voices are loud and up close; others stay quietly in the distance. If a single voice goes missing, then the entire woodland and we have lost something irrevocable.
